Love Don't Seem To Be Fair: Book 1- A Heart's Mirage (Chapter Five

Continued from here

Donna opened the Camero door and went to sit down. Looking down she saw a small white jewelry box. “Is this for me?”

“Well maybe it is for my other girl friend.” Greg said with a smile.

Donna opened it with a smile, “Other girl friend my ass.”

“Happy Birthday.” He replied as she took it out. It was a necklace made of white gold. It had a white gold teddy bear holding a heart. “Do you like?”

Donna gasped with excitement, “I love it!”

“See the heart is hollow.” Greg pointed out.

“I see. I love it thanks,” Donna kissed Greg.

He smiled, “Oh now I am not sure I should give you the other.”

“Other? You got me something else?” The teen girl couldn’t believe it.

Greg just pointed, “Glove box.”

Donna slowly opened it, first peeking and then snatched it open hard. A fluffy white teddy bear popped out like one of those worms in a can gags. Tied around this bear’s neck was a small heart shaped box. Inside was a white gold bracelet adorned with small teddy bear charms. Donna didn’t speak she just grabbed Greg’s neck and hugged him tightly.

“Good Morning Girls,” Kris said as he reached around April, Melissa, and Termite. In his hand was a birthday card for Donna, “Happy Birthday Donna. Now see this is much better than that old fake locket you wear. This is real. I thought you were going to wait to give it to her. I wanted to see her face. Did I even get any credit?”

“Credit?” Donna asked.

“Yeah, I didn’t know what to get you. Kris helped pick it out, but I bought it.” Greg said as he gave a friendly shove to Kris.

“Well thank you too. Both of you have made me feel very special.” Donna gave both Kris and Greg a kiss on the cheeks.

Kris stepped up, “Oh I could go for another one of those.”

Greg gave Kris another friendly push and they walked with the rest of their group a way from the car up and up to the school.

After a long school day Donna returned home and was sitting in her room thinking, “Well he can’t keep me on restriction forever.”

“Donna front room.” Danny yelled.

She came into the front room and to her surprise spotted Greg and Kris on the couch. “What are you doing here?”

Greg whispered, “Well, I know you weren’t having a party so I came and begged your Dad to let us give you something.”

“What?” She asked. Greg then pointed and sitting on the entertainment stand was a cake and a big brown stuffed bear. “Thanks.” Donna smiled.

Greg then took a deep breath, “Okay I will be right back.”

“Where are you going?” Donna watched as Greg moved cautiously to Danny’s room.

Kris gulped, “Good Luck.”

“Kris?” she turned and asked. Kris placed a finger over her lips.

When Greg knocked he immediately spoke, “Mr. Braunt, sir?”

“What is it Greg?” Danny’s voice was low and full of authority.

“Would you like a piece of cake sir?” He asked Danny.

Donna’s father was very quick and to the point, “No.”

“Sir, I know that Donna is on restriction but I would really like to take her to dinner, a special dinner for her birthday at an expensive restaurant. I made the reservations long before she was put on restriction, please sir.” The teen boy trembled as he stared at Donna’s father.

Danny stood in a white under shirt and military sweat pants, facing away from Greg his large broad arms folded into his chest. Greg turned to Kris and Donna. Donna felt the need to rescue Greg. “Greg, thanks but I am being punished. You have really done a lot.”

Ten o’clock and no later. Now shut my door.” Danny returned to his books and Greg did what he was told and shut the door leaving Danny to his privacy.

Donna didn’t change, she pulled on her shoes and left wearing the tattered jeans she had on. Greg and Kris were not dressed in anything but jeans either. As the maitre d’ led them to a table, the three teens received sneers from other patrons wearing suits and fancy dresses. It made Donna very self-conscious but didn’t at all seem to bother the boys.

Donna and the boys ordered lobster dinners and drinks. The restaurant was so quiet that she thought you could hear a pin drop. She commented how everyone was starring at them.

Kris grinned evilly, “Oh I can fix that,” Kris then cleared his throat and clanged his glass of water with his spoon, “Me-me-me…” To Donna’s embarrassment Kris began singing as loud as possible, “Old Mac Donald sitting on a fence… trying to make a dollar out of twenty-five cents. O------old Mac Donald…”

Donna sunk down into her seat as Greg kicked Kris, “Man, are you crazy? They are going to ask us to leave.”

At that moment an out burst came from Kris louder than before, “E - I - I wanna piece a pie cuzzzz

O---old Mac Donald is sitting on a fence.” Donna started to laugh and Greg followed. They were laughing so hard and loud that they got everyone’s attention.

Donna was still laughing when she went into the house waving bye to the boys as they drove off singing together, “O---old Mac Donald…”

Donna reached for the door knob and noticed her wrist was bare. Donna searched the yard but didn’t find it. She was sitting on the couch crying as she waited for Greg to call her back.

Danny’s bedroom light came on. “Donna, sweetheart is that you?” Donna had been crying so hard and for what seemed a long time that she couldn’t speak. She could just point at her bare wrist. Finally, she was able to tell her father she lost her watch.

Danny tried comforting her, “Donna it is probably in Greg’s car. Calm down.”

Greg searched his car and even drove back to Donna’s house. Greg, Donna, and Danny drove to the restaurant and searched for it. They even asked if it had been turned in. Eventually Donna had to face the fact that she would never see that watch again. It was gone and she couldn’t stop crying. She knew it was expensive. She knew it was not a small price for her dad. Most importantly, it was special. What ended up being a perfect day had become a tragedy and Donna couldn’t focus on anything else. She had place more sentimental value on this watch than any of the gifts she had received.

There wasn’t much any one could say to Donna. She returned to her room. She looked around at the other sentimental treasures she had. She wished she had not worn it, but she had and now it was gone Donna cried herself to sleep.

After her birthday was thanksgiving. This was a time for family and the official start of the holiday seasons. Donna’s family had been insisting on meeting Greg and now the moment of truth was at hand. It was time and there was no getting out of it. Marie was especially looking forward to meeting Greg. Donna and Marie had not gotten to see much of each other. Marie moved back in with her mom and was hiding something. Donna was looking forward to finally seeing Marie again. She just had to wait a few weeks longer.

During all of her night rendezvous, Donna had gotten to know most of Greg’s friends. She even got to know Katrina’s brother Kevin. Katrina still bullied her. Donna felt very strange eating with Greg’s family. It wasn’t an easy task to convince her parents to say yes. Donna knew Dave and Brenda didn’t care for her and truthfully, she really didn’t care for them. Greg Sr. was always really nice to her and treated her as if he thought she was a sweet young lady. Anne always treated her as a gold digger and Donna’s was about to meet his oldest sister for the first time.

Donna thought about Buddy. How would she react if it were Buddy? All of this made Donna uncomfortable so having Katrina calling her out in the middle of dinner as if they were in an old western wasn’t helping.

Brenda was frightened of Katrina. Apparently, the bully girl already attempted to beat up Brenda. Donna knew she couldn’t continue to run. Marie, Nana, and her Aunts had taught her to stand up against bullies and that is what it had finally come to. Donna would probably get hurt but she had to face this girl. She politely pardoned herself as got up from her table.

Greg went to say something and Donna stopped him, “No I am going to settle this now.” It was obvious from their reaction that no one in Greg’s family was at all pleased with the decision Donna made. Nevertheless, Donna went outside, walked up to Katrina and laid everything out in the open. “Katrina, Here I am. You want to fight me, here I am. You are bigger and you will probably hurt me but I am not now or ever going to run from you. I am not going to let you run my life by bullying me. If you want to fight me, here I am. But I am not running from you and I am not breaking up with Greg. So go ahead take your best shot.”

To Donna’s amazement Katrina smiled, “Damn you got some guts girl. More than that little mousy witch hooked up with Dave. I like you. I like you a lot.”

Katrina didn’t say anything else and Donna just watched and thought silently, “I‘ll be. Nana was right.”

After dinner, Donna couldn’t wait to be taken out of the spotlight especially with everyone looking at her as if she was a hooligan. Kevin waved Greg down as they pulled out of the driveway. Her boyfriend yelled at the fool, “Man you trying to get run over.” Kevin was panicked, “Hey man we got to get Allen. He just called from some guy's place. He is drunk and got in the really bad fight.”

“Greg? We were suppose…” As she was speaking Greg yelled at her.

“Damn it Donna! This is serious. Allen and I grew up together. We are more like brothers than Dave and me. His mom and mine have known each other since before we were born.” He turned the car in the opposite direction.

Donna didn’t argue because in her eyes family came first even those who weren’t technically family. “Understood Greg, let’s go.”

Donna waited in the car as Greg and Kevin went up to the house. As soon as she saw Greg and Kevin coming, she instinctively moved over to the hump. Greg got in and Kevin climbed in the back. Donna was facing Greg when a lanky and very drunk boy crawled in beside her. Simultaneously they turn toward each other and said, “I will be damned.”

Donna continued, “Richard. Oh my god.”

Richard immediately put his arm around Donna as if she was a long lost friend, a very close long lost friend.

Greg inquired, “You know each other?”

“Man, remember when you, Fred and I took those girls to the mud hole?” Allan stated with a slur. After a nod and yes from Greg, Allen continued, “That is her cousin, Marie. Man what a fucking small world.”

Richard was drunk and bleeding from a cut on his head. Donna stated, “I am dating Greg now.”

“Really, Alright man! Give me five. You done real good buddy. Yep this is a real keeper here.” Richard hugged Donna tightly and Donna gave Greg an uncomfortable look.

“Okay Allen you are drunk.” Greg pushed Allen away.

The young teen just smiled, “Ain’t I always.”

Kevin finally spoke, “Come on Burnout let the girl breathe.”

After Greg made sure everyone was in, he proceeded to start the car and drive away. Donna then asked the question clearly on her mind, “So why is Greg calling you Allen, I thought your name was Richard?”

“It is but it’s also my stupid, fuck up dad’s name so everyone calls me Allen because I hate fucking being called junior or little Richard.” Allen explained.

Donna then asked, “I see. Why didn’t you tell me your name was Allen then?”

“I don’t fucking know maybe cause I wasn’t drunk.” Allen was a jovial sort.

She then inquired, “Which do you prefer to be called?”

“Well now that we are practically family, call me Allen.” He leaned forward after speaking.

“Man, don’t barf in my car.” Greg warned as he pulled Allen’s arm from around Donna again.

Donna like Allen, he was always relaxed, just a laid back, fun loving kind of boy. She actually had missed him and this was weird since she had only met him the one time. However, Marie had shared many stories about their dates so perhaps it made her feel as if she knew him better.

Love Don't Seem To Be Fair: Book 1- A Heart's Mirage (Chapter Five

Continued from here

Donna felt as if her home was a prison. She did most all the cleaning, like this mourning Donna was cleaning the kitchen. She had filled the ice trays and was placing them into the freezer when she saw a candy bar in the freezer. She was hungry and though it didn’t belong to her, she took it. The chocolate was sweet and delicious. Donna never gave the chocolate bar another thought.

She and Greg went out to dinner but when she got home, everyone was sitting in the living room waiting for her. Donna thought, “Oh know, not another family meeting.” Every time her parents heard of a child going missing or being molested on the news, they would call a family meeting to discuss, “things that as a family we should talk about. Why? Because these things can happen even to our family.” It was as if her parents didn’t consider having this parent /child talks until the news reported something bad.

Donna certainly didn’t enjoy them. She had her reasons. Reasons she promised herself she would never discuss with anyone again. Reasons she promised she would forever forget. She hated these talks. Donna knew that these conversations were a waste of time. What good is talking when no one wants to hear the truth? If you tell them then you are branded a liar. The families solution to resolving a problem was by ignoring that it existed so why have these talks.

“Donna is here now,” Sherry called her face red from crying.

As Donna took a seat beside her, she realized that Sherry had to have been sitting there for sometime. “What is going on?”

“Quiet!” Donna froze, her dad was upset. Danny came in and looked at them both. “Who took the candy bar from the freezer today? It couldn’t have been your brother he is to small to reach the freezer.”

Sandra spoke, “It couldn’t have been Sherry. So, I think it is time to stop brow beating her. You know it was Donna. She always causes the problems in this family.” Donna sat silently as she watched Sherry leave to her room. Her mom was right, it was her. She did take it and she knew she should tell them she did but looking at her dad and how upset he was she didn’t. She realized that Sherry was no longer in trouble or in threat of being in trouble. Donna pondered quietly how sad her situation was. How sad it was that she had to be afraid to say yes I took the candy bar. She said nothing.

“Did you take the candy bar?” He father asked.

Donna wanted to tell the truth, Donna wanted to say yes but when she opened her mouth it wasn’t ‘yes’ but ‘no’ that came out. Why couldn’t Donna tell the truth? Why was she so afraid? Her mother often told stories about how Donna was treated when she was just a baby.

Sandra almost was bragging, “Danny and Donna’s God Father Max would come home after being on base all day. They were hard on Donna because they didn’t want her to end up being spoiled. I wasn’t allowed to pick her up and hold her unless it was to feed, change, or move her. They spanked her for every little thing. One time Danny had punished her for running and knocking over his grandfather down. While he finished his breakfast he made her sit by him and instructed her not to move. Later, it was a nice night to have dinner outside so we were setting the outside table for dinner. Everyone was seated, everyone but Donna. We couldn’t find her and later we found her where Danny had told her to sit. She hadn’t moved or spoke since that morning. At the age of three, she would run and hide the minute he came home.”

Donna didn’t know if this was true. As far as she remembered, her father was never abusive, at least not to her. He was strict and he yelled a lot. He was the perfect image of a Drill Sergeant, but if there was any truth, even a little bit of truth to Sandra’s story it could explain why Donna reached out to any kind of love that was offered to her. Even love she didn’t want or need.

“Donna, don’t lie to me. You are the only one who could have taken it.” Donna didn’t confess. She firmly insisted she didn’t take it. “Fine, you’re on restriction until you tell me the truth. Your seventeen-birthday party is canceled. When you come to tell me you took it you have to tell me what kind so I know you aren’t just saying you took it.” Nothing more was said.

Donna became stubborn. She refused to confess though she didn’t know why. She bought another candy bar just like the one she took and from the freezer door flung it behind the stove. She tried to make it look as if it flew across the room after someone jerked the freezer open hard. She knew she couldn’t do anything to lead her farther to it or they would know she had planted it there. Therefore, she waited for someone else to find it.

The morning of her birthday she was sulking in her room as she got ready for school. She heard Danny open the kitchen door and call through her door, “Donna!”

“I am getting dressed Daddy.” She stated.

He continued to talk through the door, “When you leave for school leave from the front door.”

“Yes Sir,” Donna acknowledged through the door. She threw clothes about as if she was having a tantrum. In fact she was having a tantrum, a teenager’s temper tantrum. She stomped into the house slamming doors loudly. She walked into the front room and noticed that her dad had already left for work. “Damn, why did he want me to come in here!” Donna turned to see a gift wrapped in pink silk paper and tied with yellow ribbons.

It was a small box and underneath it was a birthday card.

She filled with excitement she didn’t expect a gift despite the fact he never forgot any of her birthdays. She ripped the paper off exposing a box with a watch inside. It was a fancy silver watch with a diamond. Donna just looked at its beauty. She fondled it in her fingers and noticed something on the back. It was engraved, for my little girl, love always daddy. Donna smiled and put it on her wrist.

Love Don't Seem To Be Fair: Book 1- A Heart's Mirage (Chapter Five

Continued from here

Donna was hysterically rocking back and forth on her bed, armed with a kitchen knife; she jumped when she heard a tapping at her window. She raised her window to find Greg waiting.

“Evening sunshine…” Greg stopped in mid-sentence and starred into Donna’s face. “Donna what’s wrong.”

“They are going to kill me?” She looked horrible, how long had she been like this?

“Who?” He asked with great concern.

“Come in…” Donna went and opened the back door letting Greg in. She was acting paranoid and trembled fiercely. Donna returned to her room with Greg. He reached for her and she jumped. “I can’t do this.”

“Can’t do what?” He asked again, trying to understand what was happening.

She glared hatefully at him, “I am in pain, Greg. A lot of pain and you don’t care.”

“Donna…” he sighed.

She began to beg, “Greg, I need you to call Roxie. I need you to buy something from her.”

“Roxie who? Wait! No Donna!” Greg questioned and then exclaimed in a loud whisper.

Donna protested, “Greg, I am in pain….”

“Donna, Where? Show me.” She pointed to her knee and Greg laid her back. He gently massaged her knee, “Donna, talk to me, please. You were fine last night. What happened today? Why do you think someone is going to kill you?”

Donna began blubbering hysterically and her explanation wasn’t making any sense. Not that anyone could possibly understand her at this point. Greg kissed her gently and then whispered calmly, “Try again but slowly. Try breathing.”

His other hand caressed her back and she flinched. Greg lifted her shirt to see and she began crying hard. Donna’s back was covered with red whelps. The red swollen marks had a white hallo and were already bruising.

He clenched his teeth in rage, “Donna who did this?” Donna just cried as she buried her head into his chest. He asked again, “Donna, please.”

“Before Daddy left he said to clean the kitchen. He said if I wanted to go out with you next weekend I had to have it done. He said I had to keep it clean all week. Daddy said he didn’t want a half-ass job done either. I was cleaning it. I had my radio on and I didn’t hear mom calling me. I didn’t mean to be bad. I didn’t mean to be bad…” Donna began to get hysterical again.

Greg remained calm, “Shh… Donna I am here. Don’t get upset just tell me what happen. Please, Donna.”

“Momma was mad. I guess her and Daddy got in a fight. That is why I had my radio so loud, I guess. Oh, Greg I just didn’t want to hear it.” Donna began sobbing and Greg let her cry.

He waited sometime and then asked her to continue. “Donna I want to understand, please.”

“Daddy was leaving. Why won’t Momma just let him leave? He does it because he doesn’t want to hit her. She just won’t stop,” Donna lifted her head, wiped her tears and turned away from Greg. “When I was a kid, When Daddy was still in the Air Force, He would hit Momma. She would bleed and cry. I was about five but I can still remember it. I use to take Sherry and hide in the closet. Things got broke and Momma would even get broke. One day Daddy hit Momma and her nose was bleeding and her eye was black. She screamed that she was going to kill him. That she would wait for him to go to sleep. He told her not to wait. He got a knife, threw it on the floor at her feet, and told her to just do it. Momma went to run from him and he grabbed her hair. Oh, Greg he had his hands around her throat. They were fighting because… it was something about his uniform but I don’t remember what. He had it partially on. He was angry about his uniform but I don’t remember what about. I just remember him strangling her. I grabbed the knife, jumped on the bed, and pointed it at him. I cried and ask him not to hurt Momma I told him I didn’t want to hurt him but I would if he hit Momma anymore. He let Momma go and she ran in the bathroom. He sat on the floor with his head in his hands. He kept saying he was sorry. I told him I loved him, he looked up, and promised me he would never hit Momma again. Daddy left and stayed on Base for a while but when he came back, he kept his promise. He has never hit Momma since. He hits the wall and break things but only because Momma corners him. He tries to leave and she won’t let him. Sometimes it is as if she wants him to hit her. She throws things at him. She throws plates, glasses, knick-knacks, and anything that she can grab. She did it again today. He was leaving and before he left they got in a fight. He tried to walk a way and she followed him to the car. She threw something and broke the driver’s side window. They just kept screaming at each other. So, I turned my radio up. Momma was mad. I don’t when daddy was finally able to leave but he left and she was calling for me. I didn’t hear her. I didn’t mean to be bad.” Donna began to cry uncontrollably again.

Greg asked in a calm whisper, “Donna, what happened to your back.”

“Momma came in and shattered my radio. She threw it up against the wall and then kept stomping on it until it was into pieces. She hit me in the back with her fist. She said it was my fault. I don’t understand what I did but she kept saying it was my entire fault. She took the cord from my radio and started swinging it at me.” Donna sobbed again and again until she cried herself asleep. Greg stayed holding her and in the morning he crept out and waited by his car.

Donna got dress for school and left with Greg to his house. When they arrived, both of Greg’s parents were leaving. Anne and Greg Sr. looked at Greg; who was still wearing the cloths he had on the day before, and Donna; whose face was red from crying, as they walked into the house. She was emotionally drained and just went straight to his bedroom, where she could be alone.

Donna stopped going to her French class. She instead spent the mornings with Greg. She began making a habit of skipping classes as well. Sometimes they would go out to the Sand Company. Donna commented how different it looked during the day from when she had seen it at night. On other occasions they would go out to the beaches and do some swimming. Kris finally got over being mad and was tagging along with them. Even Sherry and Debbie would come from time to time. Greg would come over to Donna’s house after school and they would do homework together and at night, she would sneak out with Greg. On some of those nights, he would spend the night with her. They always seemed to have so much to talk about but if there was a moment of silence it wasn’t awkward, just a moment to cherish.

Love Don't Seem To Be Fair: Book 1- A Heart's Mirage (Chapter Five)

Continued from here

Donna got up an answered the phone it was Greg telling her he was home. “Come get me.”

“Now?” He asked.

“Yes now.” After hanging up the phone, Donna told both her parents she was going to the library. “Greg is going to take me. I need to check out some books for my science project.”

Donna didn’t stay in the library long. Donna had already done most of the research she needed to do. She and Greg went to his house. She watched as they added things to the car engine. Donna asked many dumb questions attempting to act as if she was interested. Later that night, she snuck out, jumped in the hot rod Camero, and was off with Greg again, “Where to now?”

Greg had a look of someone wrestling with a problem, “Well, I am going to pick up a friend but first we need to talk.”

“About?” The Teen glanced in the side view mirror.

Donna’s boyfriend spoke clearly, “Your drug habit. Donna, it has to stop.”

“I said I would quit.” Quickly she was on the defense.

Greg sighed, “Donna, I mean it please.”

The teen snapped back, “Okay don’t keep on.”

Together they went and got James. He was depressed about him and his girlfriend fighting, “Man I need to talk to Dave. Is he at your house?”

“No I don’t think so. I think he and Fred went to the Sand Company.” Greg stated.

Her eyes lit up, “What is the Sand Company?”

“Just another hang out. It is out toward the beaches.” He tossed her a look.

James looked around Donna as if she wasn’t there, “Greg take me out there. I really need to talk to Dave.”

Greg tossed her another look, “Donna, want to see the Sand Company?”

“Sure.” What kind of question was that? Of course she wanted to see it…

They drove a while and then turned off the expressway. Donna had no idea where she was. She looked out as they drove down a long stretched road that was almost like an airline runway. There were large 4x4 trucks equipped with roll bars and with lights on the top coming toward them. At the end of the strip of road though there was nothing but Sand, abandoned heavy equipment and 4x4 trucks galore.

The trucks were driving around in circles or up and down hills. You couldn’t see the trucks just thousands of headlights. The headlights were like busy bees.

James pointed, “Can you get down there?”

“No James not without burying the Camero.” Greg snapped.

The boy opened the door before the car had come to a complete stop, “Damn, well just park here. He probably has his truck up on old smoky.”

James got out and Donna turned to Greg. “Old Smoky?”

Her boyfriend placed an arm around her and pointed out in the vast darkness, “Yeah, a big Sand hill that is at a difficult angel. It is hard to get up on the top of it. Only a few can make it. Only the ones we call the kings of the mountains.”

She was overwhelmed, “I’ve played that game but this gives it a whole new meaning.” Just then, the door flung open and James jumped in. Greg looked at his friend, “That was fast.”

“He isn’t here. Sammy said he might be out at Emerson.” James gave a nodded signaling for Greg to start the car. They drove back toward mud hole. There were more trucks out there than the night before but not Dave.

James just cussed, “Maybe at the Big K.”

“Big K?” Donna asked again.

“Don’t you know anything,” James snapped.

Greg put his arm behind her. “The Big K as in the burger joint. Sometimes we hang out there in the parking lot.”

She gasped, “No way! Oh my god so she was sort of right.”

“Who?” James asked.

“My Aunt. I asked her where did everyone hang out and she once made this corn ball suggestion… Just forget it.” Donna decided not to relive that embarrassing moment. As they came close to the parking lot, she saw several teens parked and many driving in circles around the enormous parking lot.

“Greg, keep an eye out for cops.” James looked around.

Donna asked feeling a bit flabbergasted by it all, “Why?”

James rolled his eyes, “Because they don’t like us hanging around.”

“Oh I see.” She responded and then looked up, “Hey there is Kris,” Donna pointed out, “Wonder if he is still sore about last night.”

Greg smiled, his crook teeth shining like the smile of a crocodile, “Only one way to find out Donna.”

“Did I miss something?” James was now the one to make the inquiries.

To Donna’s relief Greg put it to rest, “Long story James. Not worth telling.”

“Hey Kris.” The group called.

“Hey yourself.” Kris jumped in the worn out black Vega and revved the engine.

Greg seeing he was still sore just waved a good bye. James reached around Donna and hit Greg in the arm with a punch, “Tighten up man.”

“Man you tighten up.” His friend responded, she noticed that James seemed to feel better. “Let me drive.” The tall lanky boy begged.

Greg who was a bit heftier just shrugged, “No way, James.”

Still his friend begged, “Come on man. Let me drive.”

“I am hungry Greg. Let’s go through the drive thru.” Donna interrupted.

James pointed to one entrance, “Yeah Greg, you better, the pig patrol just pulled in.”

“Yeah I see them.” Greg pulled the car into the line waiting at drive thru.

“I hate to say this but driving around in circles is boring,” Donna said with a yawn.

“Let’s go out to the St Mary’s river.” James suggested and then continued; “I will drive.” “Alright James but keep it at the speed limit, too many cops around to be dogging it.” He changed seats with his friends.

After eating, as James drove, Donna and Greg jumped in the back. They made love while James acted as chauffeur. At some point Greg looked up, “Hey man this ain’t the way to the river. This looks like the middle of Casset.”

“I know,” James said busting out laughing, “Thought we would show off your bobbing ass.”

Greg punched his friend, “Real funny man. Pull over your not driving any more.”

Donna just let the music on the radio drown out the rest of the conversation as she stared hopelessly out the window. Soon she would have to return to her prison. Soon this freedom would have to end… How she wished it could last forever… Never had she has so much fun, felt so much a live… Donna realized just how isolated she was, just how much she didn’t know about the real world….
